My Cup Runneth Over

Today, August 13th, is the first time since July 19th that I have had the pleasure of spending time with just Mia. Now don’t get me wrong, I have been having A LOT of fun the past twenty five days but man oh man has it been busy and slightly exhausting.

About to start 7 days of biking from Telluride, CO to Moab, UT

On July 19th, after work, I picked up Carl at his house and we headed towards Green River, UT. We drove there over a few days to meet up with the rest of our group to start the San Juan Huts ride from Telluride to Moab. This is the same company that a group of us used back in 2016, except that time we rode from Durango to Moab. I’ll do a more detailed series of posts on the trip this week now that life has calmed down a bit.

More details on this later this week

We finished up our Moab trip on July 29th and arrived back home in Oregon on the 30th after a long day of driving. Mia’s cousin KMak was in town for two days. Those two did some adventuring and we all hung out for a late night of chatting on Monday night.

K flew out of PDX on Tuesday morning and I, after working all day, had to pick up Paul and Noah at PDX just after midnight (so technically Wednesday). They would be here for ten days and it was my goal to have some fun with them.

Pull my finger

Between squeezing in some actual working time for both Paul and I, we also had to keep a fourteen year old occupied.

Paul, Noah and I headed up to Mt Hood to ride their bike park trails on Sunday. I’ve now done a chairlift supported day twice in my life. I prefer to “earn my turns”, but it was a super fun time. I dusted off the Niner Jet9 for this day, I definitely used every last millimeter of travel on that sucker.

I took Monday off from work so all three of us could camp at Camp Creek just down the road from Mt Hood. Paul and Noah got to use our giant tent and I got to sleep in Clifford (I think Noah was jealous).

Thrilled?

We were up early on Monday in order to catch the Mt Hood Express shuttle up to Timberline Lodge so we could ride the Timberline to Town trail.

T2T is more my style of riding compared to the lift assisted riding from the day before. Noah was not thrilled at all with the massive 300′ of elevation gain over 19 miles (we did lose close to 5K to offset that) but he soldiered on and, I believe, had a really good time. I was stuck with only 3 of 11 gears since my shifter decided to not function. We think the guy who had his bike next to mine on the shuttle rack whacked it awfully hard when removing his bike. It worked totally fine the day before.

Anyways……….

a chance to cool off with about 3 miles to go

I continued to work the rest of the week, blowing out a few hours early each day, while Noah and Paul did some exploring. Then we all goofed off each night. They visited Next Level Pinball, Cannon Beach, Voodoo Donuts, and much more.

Another highlight of the week was getting to sit down with these two and watch a lot of the UCI World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. It’s been a while since I could shoot the shit face to face with my brother about bike racing.

I dropped them off at the airport on Saturday morning. Between eleven days of travel for the SJ Huts, entertaining Mia’s family for two days and my family for ten days I am tired! However, I wouldn’t change any of it! I do wish Paul and Noah could have stayed longer. There is so much more riding to show both of them. I wish K could have stayed longer, we don’t get to see the San Fran Clan all that often, and finally I think the SJ Hut trip was just long enough. That thing is a brute!

You can sleep when you are dead!

That’s about it for now. I will start the rundown of the San Juan Hut trip in the coming days.
