Running Sucks!

While I was running home on Wednesday after work I felt a little twinge in my right calf and hamstring with less than 1/3 of a mile to go.  I managed to make it home and stretched everything out.  However during the evening and all day Thursday it felt like a slight strain and was quite uncomfortable.

I took Thursday, Friday and Saturday off from running.  Did still manage to do some weights on Thursday and ride to/from work on Friday.  Saturday was a total day off to rest, run a bunch of errands and look at a house for sale that caught our eye.

Anyways I’m supposed to be running a half marathon in 2 weeks and I needed to get in a long run this weekend.  I took it wicked easy as I left Sunday late morning for my run, however not even 1/2 mile into my trot my right calf was super sore.  Definitely feels like a strain and not a tear like last year.  I’m pretty ticked off because this is the 3rd year in a row that something like this has happened.  It seems like I can do 3-4 mile runs no problem, but as soon as I start upping the mileage one of my calves tweaks out.

So, the plus side is that it doesn’t hurt to pedal a bike, so I go home, got changed and headed out on the Niner RLT for a nice gravel/pavement that I like to do.

Nine miles of  gravel uphill

It’s about 10 miles of pavement to the start of the gravel and then about 9 miles of climbing to the top of Dixie Mountain Road before 14 miles back on pavement with a nice 6+ miles of nice downhill.  Weather was nice down in the valley but up on Dixie Mtn it was raining at a decent clip.

Those are Alpacas not trees!

I like to stop and say hello to the Alpacas on the early part of the climb.  It’s pretty amusing how they all stop what they are doing and just stare at me.  If it was Codi I’d swear they were waiting for treats.

I’m going to take it easy this week, I’ll try a short run on Wednesday, but my hopes are not high for it to work out.  If that fails then I’ll push off until Saturday or Sunday and try again.  My main focus this week is going to be stretching and some self massage.  I have my fingers crossed that it will all work out…otherwise I am going to head into the half marathon with a long period of rest.  Not the ideal prep.

Thanks for reading,

-Pete

Is that the Silver Falls half you’re aiming for? If so, maybe I’ll see you there! Thinking you happy thoughts:)

Nope, klickitat trail in Lyle, WA on Saturday. Did a short test run last night and the calf felt ok. Ran pretty slow though.

It went okay…writing up a little blurb about the past few weeks now. Not the best 1/2 I have done, but not the worst either. Think I have the calf issue figured out…..tight hamstrings!
